As a result of his exposure to Haitian culture while producing and directing Voyage of Dreams in the mid-1980s, Collis became interested in the possibilities of creating an interactive video narrative based on the myth of Elegba, African/Haitian deity of the crossroads. Using three laserdisc players controlled by speech-recognition interface (what Davis terms, "Cinematic Backtalk") and an IBM personal computer, Davis created a prototype production called Elegba's Strategem in 1991. This $45,000-funded research was groundbreaking in its implications for developing new directions in screenwriting for an interactive narrative, especially in the way it drew upon African-American rhetorical practice to develop a form of cinematic signification. .
